WHAT IS THE MACULA?
The macula is the most important part of the retina, responsible for central vision. Located at the back of the eye, in the center of the retina, the macula provides the sharp vision you need to drive, read and see details.
The risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) increases from the age of 50, and can jeopardize your vision and consequently your independence.
In the elderly, AMD is the leading cause of irreversible legal blindness. In fact, 1 in 100 people aged 65 and 12 in 100 aged 80 are affected by this disease.
Types of macular degeneration (AMD)
The disease is hereditary and much more severe in smokers. Early detection and treatment are essential to increase the likelihood of maintaining good vision and independence throughout life. There are two types of macular degeneration (AMD).
- Dry AMD
Dry AMD is the first stage of the disease. It starts slowly, eventually leading to loss of central vision. The disease affects both eyes and progresses more rapidly in one eye than the other, threatening central vision in both.
- Wet AMD
Wet AMD is derived from dry AMD and is characterized by the growth of abnormal blood vessels in your macula. These abnormal blood vessels leak fluid and blood. If left untreated, this fluid and blood will cause scarring and a drastic reduction in vision.
