As the crystalline lens is a kind of small, transparent disk inside the eye, it becomes yellowish over the years, eventually developing cloudy areas. After a few years, or sometimes a few months, these plaques usually enlarge, causing blurred, hazy vision and, in the most advanced cases, the loss of vision.<br>blindness.<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Cataracts remain the leading cause of blindness and a major cause of visual impairment worldwide.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>When we&#8217;re young, our crystals are usually like transparent glass, allowing us to see through them. As we age, they start to frost, like bathroom glass, and begin to limit our vision.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Cataracts generally appear in both eyes. Nowadays, cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure, using state-of-the-art equipment including ophthalmic lasers. This enables smaller incisions, unprecedented precision and surgery without needles or stitches. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p> Short-acting sedation and eye drop anesthesia are usually all that&#8217;s needed to keep the patient comfortable and pain-free during surgery.
